“What is Sacred Music?”

Lecture given by Cathedral Director of Music, Dr. Richard K. Fitzgerald: “What is sacred music? Music of the Church as defined by official documents.” Using enlightening Church documents on Sacred Music, Dr. Fitzgerald will explore music sanctified by the Church for Her liturgy. With examples of polyphony and Gregorian chant sung live by the Cathedral choir, this lecture/recital will be followed by a wine and cheese reception in the Cathedral undercroft. In addition, local cheese historian Dr. Leslie Lockett, will give a brief talk on the history of cheese while a string quartet from Ohio State University will accompany the reception.

Sainte Clotilde Organ School

Marie-Louise Langlais, widow of Jean Langlais (1907-1991), will give a lecture presentation on the Sainte Clotilde Organ School (Franck, Tournemire, Langlais). A reception serving a light breakfast will precede the lecture at 9:30 a.m. in the Cathedral Undercroft.

Lincoln Funeral“Ohio Mourns: The Music of Abraham Lincoln’s 1865 Columbus Funeral Observances”

The Cathedral Schola will join musicologist Thomas J. Kernan, the leading scholarly authority on the musical memorialization of Abraham Lincoln, for a lecture recital exploring the hymns, songs, and rituals employed for the late president’s obsequies in downtown Columbus.  This event coincides with Ohio’s commemoration of the U.S. Civil War Sesquicentennial.

Admission is a suggested donation of $10 at the door.
