“What is Sacred Music?”

Lecture given by Cathedral Director of Music, Dr. Richard K. Fitzgerald: “What is sacred music? Music of the Church as defined by official documents.” Using enlightening Church documents on Sacred Music, Dr. Fitzgerald will explore music sanctified by the Church for Her liturgy. With examples of polyphony and Gregorian chant sung live by the Cathedral choir, this lecture/recital will be followed by a wine and cheese reception in the Cathedral undercroft. In addition, local cheese historian Dr. Leslie Lockett, will give a brief talk on the history of cheese while a string quartet from Ohio State University will accompany the reception.

Feast of All Souls: Duruflé Requiem, Op. 9

at 6:00 p.m.

The Cathedral Choir will present Duruflé’s Requiem in honor of the Feast of All Souls. The work will be sung in the context of a liturgy celebrated by Bishop Frederick F. Campbell.

Mary-Louise Langlais

Madame Langlais will perform works of her late husband, Jean Langlais. In addition, the Cathedral Choir will present choral music of Langlais including the Cinq motets and the Messe solennelle; Dr. Richard K. Fitzgerald, conductor and Mr. Robert Wisniewski, organist.

The audience will also have the opportunity to sing the great carols of the season with orchestra and organs.

Lessons and Carols

The Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Brass present their annual program of music for Advent and Christmas. Scripture readings are juxtaposed with choral music to tell the story of the Christ child from the foretelling by the prophets to the visit of the Magi. The audience also has the opportunity to join the choir, brass, and organs in singing the traditional carols of the season.

Renaissance Music in Lent

Thomas Tallis’s 40-voice motet, Spem in alium, stands as a towering achievement in Renaissance choral polyphony. The Cathedral Choir will be joined by several additional choirs to perform this work as well as other selections of music for Lent and Holy Week.

The Cathedral Choir and soloists will by joined by the Cathedral Chamber Orchestra for a program of works for Advent and Christmas, including Felix Mendelssohn’s rarely performed Vom Himmel hoch. The audience will also have the opportunity to sing the great carols of the season with orchestra and organs.

Messe pour Notre Dame

Sunday, March 23, 2014; 3 p.m.

British concert organist and composer David Briggs will accompany the Cathedral Choir in the Midwest premier of his Messe pour Notre Dame and other works. David’s brilliant improvisations will be interspersed with the choral movements.
