Christopher Young, Organist

Christopher Young

A native of New England, Jacobs School of Music Professor Christopher Young is the winner of the 1988 National Young Artists Competition (NYACOP) of the American Guild of Organists and the 1988 Arthur Poister Competition (Syracuse University). Dr. Young has been a featured artists of national regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists. He has been a featured performer on American Public Media’s Pipedreams and has appeared in concert with the Rochester (Minnesota) Chamber Chorale and the Minneapolis Chamber Symphony. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, he earned the MM and DMA degrees and the prestigious Performer’s Certificate under David Craighead and Russell Saunders.

The Office of Tenebrae

This presentation has been cancelled along with all other public liturgies through Easter.

The Cathedral Schola’s annual presentation of music for Tenebrae, featuring motets of Gesualdo and Tallis’ Lamentations of Jeremiah, has become one of the Cathedral’s most popular events. The evening is marked by the gradual extinction of candles, culminating in the performance of Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere in a completely darkened Cathedral.

This concert will be rescheduled for the 2020-2021 season.

The Cathedral Concert series welcomes back frequent performer and intentionally renowned organist David Briggs. With a huge repertoire spanning five centuries, he is known across the world for his organ transcriptions of symphonic music by composers such as Mahler, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Bruckner, Ravel, and Bach. In fact, the Cathedral Choir will join Mr. Briggs during his appearance this season as he presents his own transcription of Mahler’s Second Symphony.

Those who have generously supported the work of Cathedral Music will be invited to a private concert and reception in their honor. This annual concert takes place in the Cathedral Apse and is the Cathedral musicians’ way of showing appreciation to those who make the Cathedral Concerts possible. Reception to follow in the Cathedral undercroft.

We are disappointed to have cancelled this year’s concert, but we are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of the cathedral community and our patrons from throughout central Ohio. We look forward to hosting you again in the future.

Organ and Brass

The Cathedral Brass joins Dr. Richard K. Fitzgerald, conductor, and Miss Nicole Simental, organist, for a presentation of music for organ and brass. The program will feature cori spezzati, a late Renaissance and early Baroque era practice involving spatially separate choirs playing in alternation. Music of Gabrieli, Litaize, Arnatt, and Bach will be played, among others, as well as new works by Tony Zilincik and Richard K. Fitzgerald.

Cathedral Choir Tribute to the Columbus A.G.O.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Columbus Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, the Saint Joseph Cathedral Choir will present a program featuring Duruflé’s Requiem (Op. 9) and Vierne’s Messe solennelle (Op. 16). Dr. Richard K. Fitzgerald, conductor; Miss Nicole Simental and Dr. David Crean, organists.

The Cathedral Choir will present Duruflé’s Requiem in honor of the Feast of All Souls. The work will be sung in the context of a liturgy celebrated by Bishop Frederick F. Campbell. Dr. Richard K. Fitzgerald, conductor; Miss Nicole Simental, organist.

Thomas Gaynor, Organist

Winner of the first and audience prizes in the 2017 St. Albans International Organ Competition, and first prizes in the Third International Bach-Liszt Organ Competition in Erfurt/Weimar, Germany, the Sydney International Organ Competition, and the Fort Wayne National Organ Playing competition, as well as being second prize winner in the Miami International Organ Competition, Thomas Gaynor is rapidly making his mark on the organ scene in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. A student of David Higgs at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, Thomas recently graduated with an MM degree and the Performer’s Certificate. He is currently pursuing his DMA degree there, as well as the prestigious Artist’s Certificate.

Lessons and Carols

The Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Brass mark the season with their annual presentation of Lessons and Carols. The afternoon will include works by Poulenc, Victoria, and Lauridsen, among others, as well as familiar carols sung by all.

David Baskeyfield, Organist

Winner of the 2014 Canadian International Organ Competition held in Montreal in October, British organist David Baskeyfield has performed numerous concerts in Great Britain and Europe, has appeared at major organ festivals in the U. S. and Canada, and has been heard on the NPR radio program Pipedreams.
