Events in the 2024-2025 Cathedral Music Concert Series

Choral Evensong

Monday, September 30, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.

Saint Joseph Cathedral Choir embraces the tradition of Choral Evensong with beautiful choral settings of psalms, hymns, and antiphons for an hour of enchanting music, prayer, meditation, and peace. Based on the ancient Divine Office and conjoining parts of Vespers and Compline, Choral Evensong is a popular musical event in the UK and across northern Europe, attracting people of all ages to its beauty, brevity, and respite. The Cathedral Choir is pleased to be joined for Evensong by Ensemble Una Voce, an independent choral ensemble founded in 2019 and dedicated to the traditions of choral music for the liturgy. Come reflect and be inspired by the beauty of Evensong amidst your hectic work week.

Cathedral Choir

Sacred Music Workshop and Annual Gold Mass for Musicians

Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 9:00 a.m.

Meant to inspire and rejuvenate all who are passionate about Sacred Music in their vocations as Church musicians, this workshop will feature talks on Sacred Music topics given by Bishop Earl Fernandes and Adam Bartlett, founder and CEO of the Source and Summit Missal currently in widespread use.

The event will be held at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, 1899 McCoy Road, Columbus, OH, and will conclude with the Third Annual Gold Mass for Musicians at 2:00 p.m.

Duruflé Requiem

Sunday, November 3, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.

Dr. Fitzgerald and the Cathedral Choir are joined by Dr. Nicole Simental, organist, to make their annual presentation of Duruflé’s Requiem. Contemplating the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, respectively, this concert will feature other choral works calling to mind the souls of those who have gone to their rest in Christ.

Lessons and Carols

The Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Brass mark the season with their annual presentation of Lessons and Carols. The afternoon will include seasonal choral works as well as familiar carols sung by all.

Nikita Annenkov, Cello

Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Nikita Annenkov is currently an associate cellist with the Columbus Symphony. Born in Uzbekistan, Nikita began studying cello at age 7 at Uspensky School of Music in Tashkent. Nikita holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he studied with Amir Eldan and Dmitry Kouzov, respectively.

Michael Schreffler, Organist

Sunday, February 9, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.

Michael Schreffler began his musical studies at the age of nine with piano lessons, as well as instruction in violin and trumpet. Shortly before college, his grandmother arranged for him to take some organ lessons and, around the same time, a concert artist performed on the newly acquired organ at his family’s home church. Thus inspired, he continued pursuing organ instruction through college, studying with Rebecca Borthwick.

Alongside several full-time careers, most recently in the insurance industry, Michael has served part-time as a church musician, filling that role for congregations in southwestern Pennsylvania and
northwest and central Ohio. In the years since college, he has received further instruction in organ from Craig Dobbins, John Walker, Robert Glasgow and Dr. Richard Fitzgerald.

Michael makes his home in Columbus and serves as organist for Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church, Upper Arlington.

Improvised Meditations on the Stations of the Cross

Fourth Annual Presentation
Dr. Richard K. Fitzgerald, organist

Sunday, April 6, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.

Dr. Fitzgerald’s work as an improviser is recognized both in the U.S. and abroad, and he was the only American invited to participate in the 53rd Haarlem International Organ Improvisation Competition in the Netherlands in summer 2021. In October 2013, he won first prize in the 2nd Annual Competition in Organ Improvisation sponsored by the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Dr. Fitzgerald was also a semi- finalist in the 2021 National Competition in Organ Improvisation sponsored by the American Guild of Organists. He has taught organ improvisation at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, MD.

Richard will call upon his own personal faith to respond to Christ’s suffering and death on the cross in a way that will enhance the listener’s spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ. Please join us for this extraordinary musical experience as Dr. Fitzgerald draws upon his creativity as both an improviser and organist; he will use the full resources of the Fritts Grand Gallery Organ. This performance promises to be a great way to prepare for the Easter celebration.

Tenebrae

Good Friday, April 18, 2025 at 8:00 p.m.

The Cathedral Schola’s annual presentation of music for Tenebrae, featuring motets of Gesualdo and Tallis’ Lamentations of Jeremiah, has become one of the Cathedral’s most popular events. The evening is marked by the gradual extinction of candles, culminating in the performance of Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere in a completely darkened Cathedral.

Lynne Davis, Organist

Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.

Playing with precision and “le bon gout” [good taste] (The Calgary Herald), Lynne Davis exhibits a “level of authority in playing French works that is virtually unmatched in this country.” (St. Louis Post Dispatch) After graduating with honors from the University of Michigan, Ms. Davis lived in France for nearly 30 years and studied with Marie-Claire Alain, Jean Langlais, and Maurice and Madeleine Duruflé. Her unique living, vast working experience, and lineage of study in France makes her a true authority in all French organ repertoire and imbues marvelous refinement and joie de vivre to her performances.
